contactos con ella el año 1999 entre los meses de Abril a Noviembre de ese
mismo año, por supuesto que en alguna ocasión aproveché de ir de pesca al
Rio Loa y Salado también. Voy a revisar que es lo que envié, porque tengo
tambien de Antofagasta, Tocopilla y trozos del camino a Tocopilla ese de dos
franjas de asfalto que Grace mencionó alguna vez. Si se les ocurre alguna
vista en especial me avisan, la busco en mis archivos y veremos.

Dear Mr. Fisk;
I have been reading the issues of the Chilex Weekly with interest
these past few months. Although I lived in Chuqui from 1963 to 1969 I
recognize many of the names I have seen in the letters to the editor and on
the list of names in the e-mail section. My name is Glen Wyman and my
grandfather (also Glen Wyman) worked at Chuqui from the mid 1920s until he
retired in the mid 1960's. My dad (Jerry) was raised in Chuqui and returned
to work at the mine in the early 60's. Like many of your readers I fondly
remember the Rio Loa, the Chilex Club, the foreign school and those care
free days of my youth.
Although I did not think I would be in the mining industry, a few
years of summer work in the industry during college changed my mind. I
received my B.S. in mining engineering in 1984 and have spent the past
seventeen years working in the western US for a number of mining companies.
I am currently working for a drilling and blasting contractor to the mining
industry and living in Tucson. I have had an opportunity to travel in my
line of work, but have yet had the opportunity to get back to Chile. I am
married and have a teenage daughter. My parents live within a few miles of
my family and dad has retired. After living in Chile, British Columbia, a
number of western states and traveling the world on projects; he has decided
to take it easy.
I have attached a picture that I thought some of your readers might
find interesting. The picture comes from my grandfather's collection and is
of one of the first shovels brought to Chuqui from the Panama Canal. My dad
believes the picture was taken in the early 1920's when my grandfather
worked for the Guggenheims prior to Anaconda purchasing the property. A
friend of mine, Edwin Orchard e-mailed the pictures of the pit taken in
1998. A comparison of the two pictures kind of made me realize how the
whole thing started and the vast amount of effort and pride a great many
people put into mine over the years. The fact that so many of your readers
have such fond memories of their youth in Chuqui only adds to the
accomplishments of everyone involved.
Keep of the great work and I look forward to ready many of the up
coming editions of the Chilex Weekly.

Thanks for the great article on Dr Bradford. I really enjoyed reading about one of the truly great! I'm sorry that I wasn't able to send you this news
clipping that I received from my aunt regarding the closure of the RH Glover Hospital and its tranfering to Calama. It would have served as a great
epilogue to your Bradford issue. Sorry I don't know the source of this article, though.

I wasn't born in Chuqui, but my parents moved there when I was 5 years old.
Just in time for kindergarden, with Mrs. Ruther!! I didn't speak English
then, but I quickly picked up. Most of my classmates we Americans, only a
few of us were chileans. Anyways, that was the begining of a forever-lasting
acquaintance. And I went all through prep school with the same classmates.
After that, we kind of dispersed all over the world. When it was my turn for
high school, I stayed in Chile and went to a Chilean school. Strange how I
felt though, I was Chilean, but I spoke better English than Spanish. I even
had problems speaking Spanish; I had to translate from English!!
Summers in Chuqui were the best. Chuqui kids didn’t go out on vacations;
they came home, to Chuqui. And all of a sudden they kept coming and of
course those were the worst days for Mr. Kulka at the Chilex. It was a time
of partying, “summer pololeos” and fun. The company made its best effort to
keep us happy and busy. Bowling, swimming, milkbars, mine tours, “open
credit” that our dads unhappily paid.
While living in CHUQUII I fell in love for the first time, had my first
boyfriend, my best friend, my favorite teacher, my first party, my first
sleeping at a friend house, my first kiss, my first pimple, and so many
other FIRSTS...
These are my reasons why I would like to join the Chuqui Group.

Ricardo Cortes (also ex-chuquicamatino)is currently the editor to the
most important mining magazine here in Chile and told me he is preparing
a nice set of photos of old Chuqui. Also I have established contact with
Glen Wyman and has sent me some photos. His dad and Grandfather worked
in Chuqui, again a hell of a source for historical photos. I am sure
that if we pursue with the correct people we will be able to assemble a
very complete gallery of historical pictures...... something to
treasure....

Ellos no tienen recuerdos significativos de la "Era de Reagan" y nunca se enteraron de que alguien le hubiera disparado.
Eran pre-púberes cuando se libró la guerra del Golfo.
El Lunes Negro de la bolsa de valores, en 1987, le es igual de importante que la Gran Depresion de 1929, y para ellos, ha existido
solamente un Papa, Juan Pablo, que ha durado toda la vida.
Nunca cantaron "We are the world, we are the children", y cuando García Márquez ganó el Nobel ni siquiera sabían leer.
Tenian 8 años cuando la Union Sovietica se desintegró.
No se acuerdan de la Guerra Fria y conocen una sola Alemania, aunque en el colegio les hayan contado que hubo dos.
Son demasiado jovenes para acordarse de la explosión del transbordador espacial "Challenger" y, probablemente, nunca sabrán que

Charlie" es un "estreno" cinematografico y que, cuando se les habla de "CHIP?s", pensarán en las papas fritas para acompanar el
almuerzo...
Recuerda que toda esta gente entró a la Universidad el año pasado: Ellos son los jóvenes ahora...y ya no tú.

First of all let me say this is really great, it´s like going back about 30 years.
This is me:
In Chile, women keep their maiden name so I´m still Barbara Harvey, and you will find that all of us still use our maiden name,
it's a legal matter.
My family and I arrived in late 1957, my father Robert Harvey worked with Mr Payne in the building of the new hospital. I have
3 sisters, Monica, Bessie and Deborah and a brother, Robbie (Roberto).
My sister Debbie was in the same grade as one of your sisters, I´m not sure which one.
Some of my class mates were Trissie Price, Susan Bose, Bobby Mc Arthur, Charlie Noe, Paul Koch, Carlitos Cortes, Marjorie
Maitland, Nelly Horber, Gary White, Robert Rand, Carmen Bailey, and I'm probably leaving someone out..
I keep in touch with Carmen Bailey almost on a daily basis (by email).
I lived in Chuqui until March 1995, when I came to La Serena where I will hopefuly stay permanently. My sisters continue
working in companies related to mining, Monica is in Minera Escondida (Broken Hills) near Antofagasta, Bessie is also there, and
Debbie in Lomas Bayas, another mining company also near Antofagasta. I worked in Chuqui for almost 17 years, and when I first
arrive at La Serena in Minera El Indio (Barrick) but now for the first time in my life I walked away from mining, I work in
Bridgestone-Firestone Chile (tire company).
Chuqui is dying as a camp, the new hospital was abandoned this year, and it will soon be covered with waste material for the
mine. Remember where Pulperia No. 1 was?, the main entrance gate to mine facilities is now located there, so all camp houses,
Social Club, Chilex Club and of course Chilex Foreign School do not exist anymore.
I'm including an attachement, look at it very closely and you'll surely be pleasently surprised.

I'd like to know more about the members of the Chuqui group, such as when we lived there, maiden name if applicable, when we
left and what we've been doing since then. Maybe add members of our family?
I'll start. When we arrived in Chuqui in 1956 or early '57, I was already going to Santiago College, so I didn't attend the Chilex
School. My younger sisters Jamie, Sondra and Luli did. Luli was born in Chuqui in 1957, and my mom and she had a near miss
during the mine explosion that rained debris over camp and the old hospital.
My parents were Jim and Billie Taylor. I was sent to school in the US in '59, so after that it was back to Chuqui for long vacation,
except for the year I spent at home between sophomore and junior years in college. During that time I kept busy working either in
the new hospital, or at the school. I was there when Bill Bashor called us in to the office to hear the news on the radio that
Kennedy had been assasinated.
When I returned to the US, it was to graduate from Arizona State. I met my husband there, and after we married we lived in
Arizona, California, Italy, Scotland and England before returning to AZ and then CA again. My younger sisters followed my
footsteps from high school to ASU. Sondra married an airforce pilot thinking she'd get to see the world as a llapa, but instead they
were always posted to Texas or Florida where they live now.
My sister Jamie went to Paraguay with the Peace Corps, then returned to settle in Massachusetts where she still lives. My
youngest sister, Luli, went to school in Montana where my Dad had been transferred in 1965. She still lives with my Dad in Butte.
Some of my fondest memories of Chuqui are playing golf on the dirt course behind the Chilex club, hours of bowling, dancing - it
seems we had parties or get-togethers several times a week. I liked going to Tocopilla, swimming in the pool or in freezing Caleta
Boy, except for the time I broke an ankle and was laid up while everyone else was having a good time. I think I have a photo
somewhere of Tito Pasut and Reggie Chellew on horseback from that time.
So - now I've broken the ice, what about you?

Yes your were assuming correctly I'm Carlos Paulsen son. I have being
living in Tenerife for the past 24 years. My parents are getting
along good, also live her. In Tenerife the weather is very good and
for elderly people this is very good, plus they have the
grandchildren, which I don't yet have and I think this makes a
difference. Konrad my brother is now in Mexico, he is a diplomat and
at this moment he will be there until February 2002. reini my younger
broher was in Chile for a few years, where things are not the best
and returened to the Canary islands. he is now in the Island of La
Palma. I still do motocycle trips yes, in fact on the 25th of July im
going to Berlin for 10 days to do a job for BMW, where they will
present a new bike to 3500 dealers worldwide. This is real fun.
Well it is good to have so many people in this group. I will try to
make a list of the ones who are not easy to identify.

My mom has been collecting all sorts of data about the history of Chuqui and
finished writing I feel the most interesting book about her memoirs. If
anyone wants to e-mail her PLEASE pass this on. There is a lot of info on
Chuqui and for those folks that went to Iran, she really did a great job of
the Iranian history and the goings on at the Sar Chesmesh Camp. Thank you for
keeping up with the Chuqui news as so many of us have had to forget for one
reason or the other and now realize what a close net enviroment we lived in
and soo terribly miss.
It's called Tapestries in Mining By Helen E. Fahm
She has not gone thru a publisher yet but it is available for purchase by
request over the internet or call Mom at 520-297-3563. I read it and
definitely for those of us that really did not understand the politics or how
our parents got to Chuqui this was very enlightening. Those that went to Sar
Chesmesh may not know all the history which I was amazed at what I read.

This is cool, thanks for the opportunity to participate in what modern
technology has offered us, congrats guys! Now I am assuming that Carlos
Paulsen is son correct? How are you Paulsens all doing, Carlos and Nena
and Carlos, your brothers and families. I had heard Reini and family had
been in Chile but were going back to Tenerife. What about you Carlos are
you still involved with motorcycle tours? We are well enjoying life in
southern Arizona where it is not too hot, we travel lots and recently
returned from a trip to the Greek Isles and Italy. We went there with
our good friends the Chaun Cadwells and the Lautaro Diazs. Charlie, that
was a good CW that you put out, again, a job well done, congrats! Bonnie
you are so close to Arizona, well sort of, if you and family ever come
this way please let us know and we can get together and visit. I just
joined the Group today and still do not know who the other 14 members
are I'll have to check out the site with more detail. Saludos to all our
good Chuqui friends, we miss you all and think of the good times we had
while there often. I worked in Chuqui twice the first time between
1966-1971 and the second time between 1974-1976, and as most of you know

Maybe I sent a confusing response. I did live in Chuqui. I was born there in March, 1929 and lived there until mid-December,
1941. We left Chuqui at the outbreak of WWII; in fact we sailed from Antofagasta exactly one week after the attack on Pearl
Harbor. My older brother, Charles, was born in Arizona a couple of years before my folks moved to Chile. He attended high
school in Buenos Aires. My younger sister, Kathleen, was also born in Chuqui.

My family has a long story at Chuqui, My mother Marta Ruiz was brought
up in Chuqui and attended the foreign school with her 3 other
sisters:Teresa, Esmeralda and Nellie,her father (Carlos Ruiz-(spouse
Purísima(Pura or Purita)) worked at the warehouse second to Mr
Maclauglin. My Dad (Edwin Orchard) arrived to Chuqui in the late 50s. WE
the Orchard lived in Chuqui until the early 70s.
Puri my sister and my self as all the family recall Chuqui with good
memories and very good friends.
I have been passing over to my parents Chilex Weekly print outs and see
how much good memories come up.
Dr Bradford gave me my first spank!-as I was deliverd-
Now I am a mine engineer and live in Antofagasta with my wife Pierina
and 2 little ones..time goes by...
Here in Anto a number os ex Chuquicamatinos live and between us and the
other ones spread along the country could contribute with the Chilex
Weekly, what do you think?

Señor Director.
Se nos murió el hospital Roy H. Glover, un lugar de encuentro, en donde
tuvimos alegrías y tristezas. Allí nació mi hijo y allí murió mi padre.
La historia llega a su fin y en Chile los chuquicamatinos serán los únicos
que no podrán decir: "voy a mi tierra", anteayer nació el último
chuquicamatino que nunca conocerá su tierra natal. Parece ser este el
destino de los pueblos del norte, ayer fue el salitre y hoy comienza el
cobre.
Me queda claro que por sobre las personas, en este mundo globalizado lo
primero es la economía. Afortunadamente, soy Lotino y si bien es cierto, que
se cerro la mina. Lota aún vive. Gracias Chuquicamata por todo y vaya mi
pesar a todos los Chuquicamatinos. Quisiera dejar una frase de reflexión:
"UNO TIENE LO QUE TOLERA".

my name is Ivan Montenegro, I lived in Chuqui from 59 to 74
my father met Dr. Darricades because he worked at the construction of the Roy H. Glover Hospital
and then stayed there as the maintenance chief.My brother Christian was the first baby born at the
new hospital on August 25 1960.I got the Chuqui web page from my friend Erich Ladner and couldn´t

Long time no see pale face, it was one hell of a surprise, to heard from you
thru the Old Chilex Weekly. Please tell me what you being doing and what are
you planning for the future, you still visiting Roger Martinez?
Last month Codelco Chuqui, made a symbolic blast in the John Bradford
Hospital as tribute to the old community of Chucos, now that all living soul
will be moved to Calama, there will be no more Chuquicamatinos. I fell so
proud of my childhood and the fantastic group of people that I had the
pleasure to meet.
Con Jorge Lambeth, we used to play golf and tennis in the day time, and with
Arturo Leon we were hunting Señoritas at night.
Old Punky Geotfert(?) sold their house in Pucon, his sister still single,
and planning to move to Anto, with his tons and tons of money.
The owner of the "Refugio" Charles Wall Jr., is about 82 years old, and is
doing well.
Tocopilla's "Casa de Reposo" is beautiful as ever, fishing disappear with
the Albacoras.
For those that don't no me or remember me, I was the youngest son of Lucho
Flores, owner of the "Teatro Chile" where you all did more than one " Miss
behavior"

Charlie: te envio la direccion del Dr.Sergio Stoppel,el esposo de Elo, ( Eloisa Ortiz), a fin de que la incluyas en tu listado y les envies el Chilex Weekly cuando y a medida que vaya saliendo, y tambien enviarle las fotos que los otros
chuquicmatinos envian...se que hay muchos por alla que se acordaran con afecto de Elo ,quizas no muchos se acuerden de Sergio, ya que eran de una generacion menor que la nuestra, pero si los viejos y, te aseguro que muchos de los que viven por alla fueron mas de una vez atendidos por Sergio, quien fue la mano derecha del Dr.Bradford, y quien despues lo sucedio como Director del Hospital Roy H.Glover como por 15 años,y quizas mas, Sergio para los que eran muy bebitos aun llego a trabajar a Chuqui creo que por alla en el año 61, si no me equivoco, y se retiro de Chuqui el año 91...es decir estuvo ligado al Hospital por 30 años...bueno y de Elo.....que te puedo decir que tu no sepas, quien fue siempre la chica mas linda del colegio,y su hermana Julieta con sus trenzas, aunque la Elito tambien las usaba,amiga de Mila Calderon y de Olga Figueroa, hoy Olga Hamilton, etc.,...asi que te pido que loss incluyas en tus listados y que aparezca en la lista de miembros del Yahoo club, para que otros sepan donde ubicarlos...

I´m Roberto Harvey R., born in Chuqui in 1959. My dad,
Roberto worked for the company since 1956 until 1970,
when the UP fired him for political reasons. I
attended the red and sturdy schoolhouse from 1965 to
1970 and went through all the changes that the chilean
administration did at school. New chilean teachers,
standard uniform, spanish all the way, etc. I´m the
youngest of six, four sisters, Barbara, Monica, Besie
and Debbie, who also attended the school before me and
my eldest brother Guillermo. I went through Bill
Bashor's period as a Principal and also with Mr.
Miller.
I´d love to join the group as I've been in contact
with some of my old classmates, Pam James, Cecilia
Román, Ivan Montenegro, Martin Kirk, and also I´d like
to contact others from whom I've known nothing since
then, Rhett Bratt, Larry Wyman, George Villalobos,
Grace Tucker, Mark Burke.... probably others I have
forgotten now.
I'm living in Antofagasta, married with two sons,
Roberto and Felipe. I joined Codelco after finishing
university where I graduated as a Chemical Engineer.
Worked at the Chuqui Smelter for ten years and then
left for a job in Zambia, Africa, also in mining.
After a time there, I returned to Chile and since 1997
I'm working for Ciba Specialty Chemicals (a swiss co.)
based in Antofagasta and supplying chemicals to all
the mining companies in northern Chile, Perú and
Bolivia.

Te envio un monton de fotos que he titulado "Chuqui Muere". Empezando por un articulo que aparecio en el peridico (en la mudanza lo
he traspapelado queria enviartelo por correo, quizas ya lo hice y no me acuerdo......
Estas fotos se las debo a mis amigos de infancia Fernado Rivas y su esposa Rikkie Brys que actualmente viven en Antofagasta. Rikkie
es la fotografa, si usas las fotos deberias darle credito pues son buenisimas y ha reflñejado con sensibilidad nusestros recuerdos y
nostalgias.
Dices que te mudas. Adonde? Yo estaba considerando San Antonio como un posible lugar para irme luego que termine aca. Dime
donde iras, quisiera estar cerca de la familia.

Abajo te voy comentando las fotos
1. La serie Chuqui Muere es un articulo de un periodico (no recuerdo cual) que me envio Rikkie.
2. Chuqui Club Sindical, parece restaurado recien pintado, este era el lugar donde ibamos a bailar cumbias con Paty, y a tomar helado
en El Refugio.
3.Dr Bradford, este es el busto que estaba a la entrada del hospital. Siento no habertela enviado para el Chilex del mes pasado, pero venia entre mis cosas desde España.
4. Estadio. Este es el estadio Anaconda donde jugo Cobre-Loa. Yo jugue un partido en el año 1956 entre el San Luis y un club juvenil local. Recuerdo que mi padre celebro mucho uno de mis goles afortunados.
5. Estadio 2. Otra vista del estadio, los murales, atras la torta de ripio.
6. Chuqui Vista General. Creo haberte enviado esta foto antes pues aparece en un Chilex. Es una vista ha de la calle principal mirando hacia el sur y el Teatro Chile.
7. Gimnasio, esta es la entrada al gimnasio del Club Obrero.
8. Hospital El hospital que solo duro 40 años. Aca nacio mi hija Marjorie y ademas el Dr. Bradford opero a mi mami de la vescicula en
1966. Ahora se traslada a Calama, mira el articulo que te adjunto al final.
9. Otra vista del Hospital, al fondo se ven las tortas de escombros que lo sepultaran.
10. Iglesia. Esta Iglesia (por ahi tengo el nombre) se construyo en 1916, aca hizo la primera comunion nuestra hermanita Mary.
11. Mural. Este mural aparentemente esta a la entrada del estadio y mostraria el "traslado a Calama"
12. Plaza.y Plaza2 Esta es una vista de la plaza, el `paradero de los taxis al "americano".
13. La pulperia Central esta no existia en nuestro tiempo, no la recuerdo para nada.
14. El Teatro Chile donde de chico ibamos a ver la serie de Trazan en la matinee de los dias domingos , con diez pesos entrabamos
todos.
15. Traslado este es un articulo del periodico el dia del cierre del hospital y su traslado a Calama.
16.-Washington, el Hotel restaurado y recien pintado.
