Hello Charlie,
Saw the latest issue (April) of your publication. It brought to mind those kinder, gentler times we all seem to have lost in today's hurry-up world. The pictures of the old "Club" depict it just as I had remembered it. As I read your article and viewed the pictures, I was reminded of the all the wonderful hours I spent in that building. The countless birthday parties in the old ballroom, swimming in the icey cold water of the pool, bowling and having to set our own pins in the mechanical pinsetter in the bowling alley, having my hair cut by the gentle old fellow in the barber shop and being humiliated by having to sit in the kiddie seat while he did his job. I recall performing in the school plays in the old gymnasium and how petrified I was by having to perform for a "live" audience. The requerdos go on and on and are too numerous to recount. Needless to say, I do miss those days and think of them often.
Your piece about old pal and fellow bandido, Johnny Bradford was great and as I read the article I too was reminded of the "smoking room" under the house. However, my recollection is, that we all had corn cob pipes in which we smoked tea leaves and coffee grounds. On occassion, when we were lucky enough to snitch a cigarette or two, as I recall, it was mostly those terrible "Embajadores". Your publication also brought to mind my having shared membership with you and other old friends in the exclusive "Robin Hood Club" and as a member, being sworn to secrecy in blood with the group. I remember those "Robin Hood" forays into the cold Chuqui nights and then trying to sneak back into the house, hoping that Johnny's "Big Granny" would not catch us. I remember too, the raids on the stock room of the "Chilex Club" and bringing back to our lair, the booty of creme soda and coca cola. I remember going to sunday school with Johnny and the wonderful empanadas we always had afterwards at the old "Club Social. Great memories Senor Charlie and I thank you for again bringing them to me.
Saludos y un abrazo,
Richard D.

Hello there ! Amazingly, I was told about this web site a few days ago and found it today. My name is Anita (Ann) Bache-Mathiesen (Kristensen). I lived in Chuqui from 1952 (or 53) until we moved to Peru in 1963 (or 64). I (48) live in the city of Moss in Norway (NOT Sweden as stated on your list !) with my husband (51) and 2 daughters, 19 and 10 years old. Our 25 year old son lives in the same town. I would love to get in contact with my old friends from Chuqui. I can see myself on the stairways, in the picture you have from a birthday party on the web site. As a start, here is my correct address/phone/email. I had to change my name, in Chuqui everybody called me Anita or Anitita (little Ann, you know !) The nickname stuck, so now I use Anita instead of Ann.

As I used to when I was more involved I am again putting out a "still looking for these..."
Has anyone any news about: Mickey White, Harry and Mary Louise Martin, G.G. Brooks, Richard and "Sassy" Clary. Mickey, G. G. and the Clary's came to Chuqui in approx. 1959/60. Their fathers were brought down to work on the Roy H. Glover Hospital and so weren't in Chuqui for very long. G. G. 's father died of a heart attack and the family left Chuqui. Harry and Mary Louise lived in Chuqui for quite a while during the middle to late 50's. Como se pasan los anos!

Gracias por el ultimo numero de noviembre. He visto con gran interes el trabajo de Ian. Quizas deberia renunciar a mi pega e irme a Chile a hacer juguetes.

The article on the hospital sounds like a nice idea. I have forwarded your letter to my sister Connie (bgartner@aol.com) as I left Chuqui, and subsequently Chile, at a very young age. I never even saw the old "new" hospital until 1994 when it was on its last legs, so to speak. Oh, also I will sendyour letter to my sister Gigi (jedjd@fone.net) as she may be some help as well, as she actually lived near the Roy H. Glover with my parents. Nice of you to call mi papi an "icon." We always thought the world of him. I'm sorry my own children and grandchildren didn't get to know him better.

Subject: Chuquites - Bill Bashor/Pat León de Bashor Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 21:54:44 EST From: Bill4319@aol.com Hello...... In a recent Christmas letter from Len Miller he gave us your Chuqui website and Pat and I been exploring it much of this evening! We have thoroughly enjoyed what we've seen and it has brought back many memories to both of us. Pat I see is in your list of "People who lived in Chuqui." I, however, am not and would very much like to be listed. I can't recall if I ever met you, but through Pat have heard your name often. I lived in Chuqui from 1/61 to 9/69. First I worked for two as a teacher at the Chilex School and later served as school principal from 63-69. One of the photos of the (Chuqui63.jpg) was one of my classes. In it is my brother-in-law Luis (Lucho Leon). We returned to the US (Denver area) in Sept of 69 and have lived here since then. Both of us worked in the Denver Public Schools for many years, Pat as a teacher and I as a teacher and later principal of various elementary schools. As you may know, Willie Leon, my father-in-law, now lives in Denver also, so we see much of him. Actually, it is he who keeps us most up to date on ex Chuquites since he seems to correspond with many, many people both by US mail and via e-mail which he has recently gotten into. Again, congratulations on y our wonderful website!!!!!! We truly enjoyed it and will be looking at it frequently. I will look through my old Chuqui pictures to see if I have anything of interest. If so, I'll send some of them to you. Best wishes, Bill and Pat Bashor Bill4319@aol.com Bill e-mail Cotapos@aol.com Pat e-mail

Dear Mr Fisk,

First, many, many thanks for the work you and Grace have done for all of us.
I think we all appreciate it beyond words.

I have some information on some folks who lived in Chuqui long ago.
Genevive (Antonich) LaMotte lived in Porterillos from Sept 1928 to March
1934. Then she was in Chuqui from June 1937 to July 1938 as a student. She
returned to Chuqui in Oct 1942 to teach in the Foreign school until Dec 1945.
She is the daughter of Milano and Anna Antonich who were in Chuqui from 1936
to 1951. She now lives in Tucson with her husband of 50 years, Stuart
LaMotte.

She is friends with my mother-in-law, Karolina Stupar, who was in Chuqui from
Jan 1936 to October 1946 and then in Tocopilla until 1964. Mrs. Stupar lives
with us in Tucson.

Thanks again for all you good and hard work.

Thanks for another super issue! I enjoyed it tremendously and do appreciate

your new map brings back so many memories.

Who would have thought that so many years later, we'd be in touch again? I

It was a "blast from the past" to read the latest issue of the on-line
Weekly. You are to be commended, Charlie. For some reason I never saw
the April issue before. I enjoyed memories of the Chilex Club too. I
think there is something about our childhood as chuquicamatinos that is
somewhat surreal. It is always exciting to read about someone who lived
in our peculiar but often thrilling environment.

I can remember "crashing" a New Year's Dance at the Club with Jo Ann
Key. My dad was in a good mood and didn't scold us. Not even Mrs.
McLaughlin (the school principal, who was also there) scolded us. It
was close to midnight and everyone was in a good mood. We danced with
everyone although we must have looked out of place in our sweaters and
skirts when everyone else was in evening dress. I couldn't wait till
the following year, when I had been away to Santiago College and could
threfore officially be allowed to attend. I wore my beautiful yellow
chiffon dress that my aunt bought for me at the "nearly-new" shop where
she worked as a volunteer in Ottawa, Canada. You know what? It was
okay, but the first party was much more fun.

I enjoyed seeing the article on Ian Davidson, whom I never really knew
except as one of the "to-be-worshipped" older kids. His toys are
impressive. I think Clarence does similar woodwork, doesn't he? I have
just read his account of Iguazu which I translated for my
brother-in-law, because we went there (my older sister and I, with our
husbands) in 1994, when we made a long-delayed pilgrimage to Chile.

I also enjoyed Glenn Waterman's account of the feeling-no-pain Foley
Brothers employee bringing his trout to the Chilex Club! Do you
remember the legendary fish they called "Old Lasana"? Someone caught
that fish, I believe, but I don't remember who.

Well, Charlie, I just want to congratulate you again. And Graciela too,
for all her work she has done, especially as being the "prime mover" for
the Chuqui network. That's a lot of work you both have accomplished.
Even more work than making pastel de choclo. :-) Our own Canadian kids
used to love pastel de choclo, but for our grandchildren, the "jury's
still out." It doesn't help that the beautiful 13-year-old older
granddaughter is a vegetarian.

Abrazos,
Renee
