Hi, Gracie! How are you? Long time we haven't heard from anyone. Things
still going on with the Chilex Weekly? Here's a photo I got from Gaston's
parents while we were in Chile last week. Gaston took a picture of your
house in Chuqui and says to tell you it's still standing. We'll send it
along when we get the pics developed.
Let me know who you recognize and I'll "fill in the blanks".
Do you remember Claudio Garcia? His brother was Juan Jose. Claudio
suffered a fatal airplane accident a couple weeks ago in the south of
Chile. Sandro and Teresa Marini's son was also killed in the accident.
Terrible thing.
Saludos,
Tito and Leah

Dear Mr Fisk,
I don't remember you and you probably don't remember me, but my family also
lived in Chuquicamata for over 15 years. We arrived there in 1957 and first
lived
in one of those two floor houses near Pulperia # 1. We lived next to the
Gleasons' (Larry and Keith). Of course I went to Freida Ruther's
kindergarden, as we all did and latter on to the Foreign School. I was in
the same grade as Gigi Darricades, Michael Clark, Lucho Leon, Ann
Kristensen, Vicky Woodbridge, Steven Bosse, Carlos Paulsen, Sally Hodges,
Maureen Hurley, Susana Sandoval, Patricia Cortes, Eva Wiercinski (I think
its how its written) Patricia Hedges, Alicia Chellew, Jeffrey Ferguson,
David Warren (hope I'm not missing anybody). Miss Perrick and Miss Palosia
were my first teachers (I'm not sure if I'm writting them correctly,
its been so long). I remember Bobby McArthur, Ricky Teel, Gary White and his
little sister Cheryl. Of course I remember the Swains, we lived close by
(about the third house we lived in while in Chuqui) in House 1301, right
next door to the Cunliff's. Of course I was "una cabra chica" for Kenny
Brown and Jose Avenda?o, "Boy" Swain, George Maitland, Tony Hurley and
others, but eventualy did hang out with them when I turned 17 or 18. In
Chuqui's last years of Anaconda, Eduardo Machuca, "Laddie" and Lorna
Skupham, George and Marjorie Maitland, Carmen Bailey, and a few others were
the last to leave. A lot of us are still in Chile, and see each other once
in a while. Sergio Valenzuela, George Maitland, Laddy Skupham, one of my
sisters (Besie), (Ponky Gopfert, Harold Horwood and Jorge Lambeth until a
few years ago) work in the same company (mining company of course, they
called us the Anaconda Kids) and others, like John Mclachlan, Reggie
Chellew, Ponky Goepfert, are still related to the mining business.
I am actually living in Santiago with my family (husband Radoslav and three
kids 25, 19 and 16). I know a lot of Chuquicamatinos that live in Santiago
as well.
I just could go on and on... I will certainly look for recent news from the
past in this wonderful media.
Keep safe everybody.....

Hello from Massachusetts:
My sister, Bonnie Taylor Hamre, has passed along your email addresses. I've
lived in Massachusetts since 1975 (in Chicopee since 1984), but I'm moving
home to Butte, Montana--where my dad, Jim Taylor, and my sister, Lucy
Taylor,
live--later this summer, probably in August. We Taylors have no family
connection with Massachusetts...I just moved here in 1975 after completing a
couple of years in the Peace Corps in Paraguay (1972-1974).
My best friend all through school (2nd-8th grades) in Chuqui was Lucy L.
Letchford, with whom I still correspond. Lucy's older sister is Cathy
Letchford and her younger brother is George Letchford, both in the United
States now. Their father, Ken, died a number of years ago, but their
mother,
Elena, is living in Florida, I believe. Lucy currently lives in Roswell,
Georgia, outside of Atlanta, but I have no email address for her.
Lucy and I were part of a 7-member graduating class from the Chilex Foreign
School in 1962, the first "accelerated" 8th grade to graduate in August
instead of December, so that we could start high school in the States on
time
in September. Other members of that class were Carl Teel, Kenneth Brown,
Jose Avendano (who died in a car accident in Arizona some years ago), Peter
Woodbridge, and Ethel Cortes. Evelyn Swift was our school principal, as well
as our 8th grade teacher, at the time.
I'm looking forward to checking out the Chuqui site that Bonnie forwarded,
and to a continuing dialogue about Chuqui.
Best regards,
Jamie Taylor Barrett

Good to hear from you, Charles.
I've been trying to place you and Graciela, and failing - sorry! From the
photos I remember Walter Morton, Reggie Chellew, Tito Pasut and Johnny
Bradford but not you. How strange.
We moved to Chuqui in 1957, when I was already in school in Santiago (at
Santiago College) but my younger sisters went to the Foreign School. I
forwarded your note to them in case they have memories or photos they want
to share. We lived in house 1220, if I remember correctly, and my mother
coaxed a garden in the front, with pepper trees, geraniums and a bit of
grass and other flowers.
My particular girl friends were Carmen MacDonald, Carolyn Gephart and
Christine DeBruyne. Boy friends? I think I had crushes on every guy in
camp at one time or another!
After Santiago College, I went to school in Minnesota, and then Washington,
DC. I was part of the gang who took over the Panagra flights, as the
"school bus" to and from Anto for long vacation. We used the Chilex Club
as home away from home, enjoyed picnics to Lasana and Chiu Chiu and had a
party for any reason at all. Sometimes with no reason!
I do remember some of the teachers at the Foreign School from a social point
of view. Mrs. Swift, of course. Martha Holden and BJ Stanley, Doris Ross
and Len Miller, and later Joe Smith. One winter vacation, BJ directed a play
and most of us were in it, one way or another. Rehearsals at the club were
great fun, as were the performances. Bill Bashor was principal when I
worked as an aide there in 1963. I remember when Kennedy was shot and we
all crowded into his office to hear the news on the radio.
I left Chuqui in June 1964 to complete my education in the US, as did my
sisters after me, until my family left Chile in 1965. Funny, I loved Chuqui
and always thought I'd return, marry and raise my own family there, but no.
We have no family connections to Chicopee. Jamie settled in the area
after her stint in Paraguay with the Peace Corps. She's very active in the
Latino community there and teaches ESL among other things.
By the way, I placed a link to CW2000 on my Chuqui page at
http://gosouthamerica.about.com/msubChChuqui.htm
Ciao,
Bonnie
