I remember your name and I’m quite sure I remember your braids, but we
didn’t know each other! I am very impressed with your effort to gather
new Chuqui news. The Chuqui days seem so very distant. Not only is it a long
time ago, I also live so very far away. Recently a friend of mine was in
Chile and he e-mailed me some fotos including one of a dried out river.
Especially that picture sent me back in time. I could smell the hot dry air
and feel the sun!
Since you seem to have little news of me and my sisters I’ll give you
a some dry facts as a starter.
Anita (Ann), Helen and I live in Norway while Liv lives in Spain. Liv lives
in Madrid, is married, has two sons (22 and 21) and works with her husband.
Anita lives in Moss, is married, has three children a son (24) and two
daughters (17 and 9) and works at a music academe. Helen lives in Nannestad
near Oslo’s new airport where she works, is married and has two
children a son (14) and a daughter (17).
Me - I live in Porsgrunn, but am moving closer to Oslo this coming summer. I
am divorced, have a daughter (22) and a son (20). I am a special advisor on
teaching and enjoy my work very much. Maybe I’ll get together with a
sister or two soon and have a remember when evening so I can send you a good
story or more for the Chuqui paper.

I don't know if you've heard about us. My name is Carmen Bailey. I was born
in Chuquicamata on August 20, 1951. My father's name is JOHN BAILEY, who
worked in Chuqui and my mother's name was Carmen Arriaza (she unfortunately
died 1981). I live now with my father and my two children, a daughter of 23
and a son of 21. My husband also was from Chuqui. I married Alan Hammer, who
also unfortunately died last year (May 8), son of Rolando Hammer and Grisel
Fairlie. My father retired from Chuqui on 1976 and since then we have lived
here in Antofagasta. When I got married I lived in Santiago some time and
came back 1982. I have a brother named John and he lives in Santiago. This
is a brief summary so you can know a bit of us in case my father's name
isn't familiar.
I am always in touch with Erwin Goepfert (Ponky), Laddie Skupham, George
Maitland sometimes, but here are a lot of "Chuquinos" who I can contact. The
reason of this e-mail is to tell you that I was so happy because about a
month ago I received "El Noticiero" in my house. I don't know who sent it to
me, maybe you did or if not, some of the "Chuquinos" who live here. It is so
nice to hear from all of you. We really lived a very special life in Chuqui,
and only US, understand that. We were all a big family, and though we have
almost gone in different directions, we still keep in touch in many ways.
Thank you again for this beautiful news, reminds me of the Chilex Weekly and
the Oasis. WHAT BEAUTIFUL TIMES WERE THOSE.
Susana Sandoval, also raised in Chuqui, daughter of Héctor and Elba
Sandoval. Both her parents died, she is married with Carlos Bustos, who
actually works in Chuqui, has two children, a boy and a girl, and is still
living there.
Well, I hope I will continue from now on receiving El Noticiero, I showed it
to my father too. He will be 83 the 15th. of August..

Hi,
Bobby McArthur recently visited us and introduced us to this wonderful
page.
My husband Michael Lerman lived in Chuqui from Summer, 1969 until May 1971.
He was shift foreman in the mine. I, Harrie Klion (as I was then) moved and
taught in the school in Chuqui from February 1970 until May, 1971.
We live in Yorkshire (near the home of the Bronte's - authors of books in
the 19th Century. Also, not too far away from the famous vet/author James
Herriot) England. We'd love to hear from any one who may have been in
Chuqui during the same time and better still have company with these
people....many years to catch up on.

por Clarence Fisk desde Espana
Por sia'ca en Espanol significa "just in case" que nosotros los chilenos lo
acortamos al hablar y decimos simplemente "por sia'ca."
Claro que en Chile y en Espana no hay diferencia entre el Castellano y el
idioma Espanol. Lo que paso es que a America llegaron Los Castellanos, o
sea, los espagnoles del area de Castilla. Los origenes del Castellano se
remontan al siglo 7 al Monasterio de Suyo en el area de La Rioja de
Castilla. Podrian haber llamado al idioma que hablamos en Chile "Extremeno"
pues la mayoria de los espanoles que colonizaron Chile venian de Estremadura
- que es una provincia del oeste de Espana que limita con Portugal. Es una
de las mas pobres y es la razon por la cual tantos extremenos se fueron a
colonizar otras tierras en America. Decir idioma espanol o castellano es lo
mismo, no existe diferencia. Es naturalmente mas correcto referirse al
idioma como "Espagnol" pues es el idioma que se habla en todo el mundo de
Hispano-America y Espana.
Sobre la "N", el espanol es el unico idioma que la usa pues en portugues o
italiano para obtener el mismo sonido nasal de la N se usa l "gn" or "hn".
Yo tengo problemas con mi teclado en casa pues es formato USAmericano y no
tiene N, tengo que usar "gn" or teclear "control 164". En Europa ahora hay
today una controversia pues se esta tratando de estandardizar el teclado
para toda Europa y quieren eliminar la n. Naturalment que los espanoles se
estan resistiendo "como gato de espalda" (espero que entiendan - this means
"fighting like a cat on its back").
De mis padres: Mi padre murio en Danbury, Connecticut el ano '86 a los 73
anos de edad. Fue expulsado de Chile por el gobierno militar en Octubre '73
y estuvo preso en el Estadio Nacional. Despues de 40 anos en Chile salio con
solo lo puesto! Mi madre se enfermo de Altzheimers como a los 65 anos y
vivio los ultimos 15 anos de su vida sin conocer a sus seres queridos. Murio
tambien on Danbury, Connecticut en 1990. Ambos padres fueron cremados y
Charlie guardo sus cenizas por muchos anos an su casa hasta que en noviembre
de 1996 nos reunimos todos los hermanos y Mary en Santiago y con las cenizas
de nuestros padres hicimos una ceremonia en el Cerro Santa Lucia y
esparcimos sus cenizas en el tope de cerro donde existe una Plaza Darwin y
donde ahora hay dos pinitos abetos llamados Charles y Maria. Cada vez que
estoy en Santiago me voy al cerro para conversar con ellos. Creo que estan
felices en el cielo.
De mis hermanos: Charlie casado con su high school sweetheart vive en San
Antonio, Texas y esta retirado de IBM y trabajo a tiempo parcial por una
empresa de seguros. Tienen dos hijas, Paula y Carolina. En su tiempo libre
trabaja en el Fisk Web Site que tiene todo nuestro arbol genealogico hasta
Inglaterra de 1399 y la rama que se establecio en Boston en el siglo 17
ademas los Fisk Chilenos. Hay cuentos, cientos de fotos de la familiar, de
hijas, hijos y nietos, dibujos mios y mis cronicas de viages (yo viajo much
por todo el mundo). Arturo, mi hermano que me seguia, murio en un accidente
de moto en Santiago en Mayo de 1961 a los 19 anos de edad. Herbert sigue en
Chile y tiene tres hijos que continuaran la rama de los Fisk en Chile. Esta
jubilado de la Armada y se dedica a su casa. Mary se caso con mi mejor amigo
de la universidad y emigro a Espana en 1965. Es profesora de ingles, ademas
artista ceramista y restauradora de muebles antiguos, etc. Nos vemos todas
la semanas pues vive a 15 km de mi casa. Mis hijas viven en Manchester y
Bloomfield, Connecticut pues yo trabaje para Combustion Engineering en esa
area por diez anos..

My family left Chuqui and moved to Tocopilla in 1956. I did return and live
with my aunt and uncle, Shirley and Clark Leaphart, when I was in the 6th
grade which would have been in 1960. I left Chile in 1965 and never
returned.
I was married in 1966 and had two sons - Mathew who is 31 and Michael who is
28. I lived in the San Diego area when I was first married as the boys'
father was in the Navy Seals. We were divorced in 1973. When I remarried in
1975 we moved to Santa Rosa to be closer to my mom, Marge Eastman, who was
living here by herself. My father passed away in 1970. The boys grew up here
and in Alameda after my second marriage ended in 1980. Mathew joined the
Navy and became a Navy Seal to follow in his father and Uncle's (my older
brother Steve was also a Navy Seal - he passed away in 1992) footsteps.
Mathew spent four years doing that and then returned to college and
graduated from USC and is now an investment banker in Los Angeles and lives
in Pasadena. My younger son, Michael lives here in Santa Rosa and is a
paramedic-firefighter in the area.
All in all, I have one grandson and three step granddaughters and all I can
say is that being a grandmother is one of life's largest blessings. Now, as
for me I have been single since 1980 and since 1989 have been running an
in-home day care and now I have a roommate who also works with me. I
absolutely love what I do. It can be most exhausting but so rewarding. To
keep life interesting I also work every other weekend at the funeral home
where my mother lives. Mom volunteers several days a week at our local
hospital and keeps herself very busy. My aunt and uncle moved here from
Montana in the late 70s.
In 1998 Mary Kuchs came and spent the night with Mom and we all went out to
dinner and sat and laughed and talked about the "Good Ole Days". I saw
pictures of Arlene's 15-year old daughter and Charles and his family.
